Auroville was created as a galaxy shape universal community to realize the true human unity in South India by “the Mother” - Mirra Alfassa. Its concentric circular form is an icon of creating “ultimate unity” for all human kinds from all places. The town was envisioned as a place all human beings could live freely to pursue their aspiration and conscience of life. Furthermore, Auroville is a city in the making, as residents are utilizing materials in many forms from nature to help build their communities, which is a true form of sustainable living.

Auroville is a place to build relations among all human beings. Individual spirit has greater value than material wealth and social status in the community. Citizens work here to express themselves and explore their consciences and possibilities of life instead of a mean or make a living. People here devote their life and skills to build the universal township collaboratively.

The Story

With the spiritual influence and dual philosophies from the Mother and Sri Aurobindo. Auroville was created in south India, mostly in the State of Tamil Nadu, a place was designed as a unique community where the individual and the collective meet in the search for a higher consciousness. It was envisioned as a universal township which could host up to 50,000 residents from all over the world. As one of the most remarkable plans was called “galaxy plan”, which upgrades the conventional concentric town planning for defense mechanism and unity, to enclose all human beings and leave out of flexibility for organic growth.

To realize the concept of human unity, Roger Anger was invited to be the chief architect of the project. He envisioned a town he is creating, which would be “a totally unprecedented psychological, social, educational and architectural experiment,” and continue to evolve within “its physical body, life there, its society and also its genius.” In this manner, the town would be allowed to materialize or physically grow according to its own dynamism, like different demands from residents, so that a united vision between the designers and future residents could share. However, it is difficult to create an architectural design which left out flexibility to accommodate unprecedented demands, and not create arbitrary for the vision.

The concept of collaborative living attracted young people from all over the world. The rapid population growth washed away a day-to-day experiment of organic growth. Many of these newcomers tended to arrive with professional backgrounds and lacked the hang-ups against urbanization which burdened some of the early residents, who planted many trees and envisioned to live in with nature. It was both existing residents and newcomers’ responsibility to figure out how to grow together.

After its founder passed away in 1973, Auroville plunged into a struggle around the collective organization and decision-making. Its pace of development slowed down and confronted with “conservative opposition that was unwilling to push forward to the future.” Of course, for the time being, human beings are simply continuing to perpetuate a hollow, comfortable, and uncreative system that has nothing to do with the future, nor with “The Mother’s” dream. Additionally, 1978 to 1984, Roger Anger resigned from the organizing committee, but later he made himself available again when conditions seemed to have become more favorable. Roger became the main person to carry out the vision of the Mother.

By that time, to pursue the organic growth, resident architects had begun to develop gated communities on the scattered lands in their own individual styles in an attempt to solve the pressures of urbanization rather than succeeding in creating wider synthesis and unified urban development as in the case of the city plan. Although later on, the Auroville Foundation Act was passed, the establishment of humanity needs a central leader, or at least decentralize the leadership into a more stable group of leaders who share the same vision.

Auroville is still thriving today, because its business models are practical enough to be able to generate enough import for the community, so residents here could keep different community system running through their contribution and receive what they need for their daily lives.

Organizational Contract

 - Revive traditional skills and link ancestral and vernacular traditions.
In Auroville, the work of building buildings and homes has attempted to revive traditional skills and to link ancestral and vernacular traditions of raw earth construction with the modern technology of stabilized earth.

 -  Move away from the norms of conventional social economic systems and enter into a more “giving” space.
To live and work in Auroville requires one to move away from the norms of conventional social economic systems and enter into a more “giving” space where personal needs and desires are secondary to the collective good.

 - Be convinced of the essential unity of [humankind].

 - To have the will to collaborate in all that furthers future realizations.

 - The material conditions will be worked out as the realization proceeds.

 - Respect for nature and the environment is expected from all.

The Mother clearly indicated the broad lines that were to be observed in our material life. These are to form the basis of our collective existence but should not be applied in a dogmatic and rigid manner. Therefore the framework of the collective life of Auroville should be vast and very flexible; it is evolutionary in character and will change according to the individual and collective growth of consciousness and with the progressive emergence and expression of the inherent truth of Auroville.

 - Relationship
Relations in Auroville should be based on sincere collaboration and fraternity. Conflicts among residents are to be solved within the community, in a manner that is consonant with the spirit of Auroville. Any form of violence or abuse has no place in Auroville.

 - Participation
Participation in meaningful work is an essential aspect of living in Auroville. Everyone is expected to take up an activity that corresponds to the needs of the community in harmony with the capacities, priorities, and needs of each individual.

 - Contribution
Everyone is expected to contribute to the collective welfare of work, kind, and/or money. Productive units are expected to contribute a substantial part of their income or production to the township.

 - Property
Each resident is expected to deal with his or her resources at the highest level of his/her consciousness. All are, according to Mother, collective property to be used for the welfare of all.

 - Housing
Housing will be built and owned by the collective and assigned to individuals and families on the basis of need. All who can be asked to contribute generously to the housing fund.

 - Education
Auroville is intended to be a place of unending education for all and there are already many opportunities for the various categories of people (including people from the surrounding villages) who live in the area to develop their potential and learn new skills.

“Humanity is not the last rung of the terrestrial creation. Evolution continues and man will be surpassed. It is for each individual to know whether he wants to participate in the advent of this new species.
For those who are satisfied with the world as it is, Auroville obviously has no reason to exist.

– Mirra Alfassa, The Mother

“There are no drugs here and alcohol and smoking are discouraged – along with that route the spiritual path is hindered. Please remember that we’re not hippies but seriously looking for alternatives.

– Tim Wrey, Aurovillians

“Man is a transitional being. He is not final. The step from man to superman is the next approaching achievement in the earth evolution. It is inevitable because it is at once the intention of the inner spirit and the logic of nature’s process.

– Sri Aurobindo, Philosopher, Influential leader of the Mother

“We would like to allow Auroville to materialize according to its own dynamism so that a real communion can establish itself between those who live in Auroville and those who create it. … We certainly have no intention of building arbitrarily.

– Roger Anger, Lead Architect of Auroville
